π Note: Even though some claim that 70-80% of jobs are not published on job boards and are filled through referrals, my experience differs. What I have been observing is that more and more companies are legally required to post jobs to the external world and review all applicants, so the share of those "unadvertised" jobs is smaller. However, the strategies they recommend adopting are very reasonable.
From 6 of my recent jobs, only 1 of them was cold (through a job posting). And 5 were through referrals. Keep in mind, that some companies have more favourable treatment of referred candidates, while others are fairer and do not give any extra points when evaluating talent. However, being referred will almost certainly help you get in front of the hiring manager's eyes. Highly recommend.
PS there is an interesting debate against relying on referrals too much - people tend to refer people they like and have more in common with, which can result in a less diverse team.
